Cycle NC Welcome Stage

The last few weeks have been a bit hectic for me to say the least. I signed up for Cycle NC over 3 months ago and tomorrow is day 1 leaving from Elkin, NC and riding to Mayodan, NC.

Three weeks ago, I was really doubting if I could even ride due to some young lady turning in front of me while riding my 2006 Scott CR1 team edition. Fortunately for me, I escaped without any major injuries. Let me tell you from experience, cars hurt, and roads hurt even more. and the Scott, well, it’s in 11 or 12 pieces.

I spent the first 2 weeks running back n forth to Dr. Appointments, getting x-rays, and therapy. Not to mention trying to deal with insurance companies.

This past week I finally got to buy my new bike. I chose a 2012 Pinarello Paris.  I was able to build it with the help of a few friends at The Spirted Cyclist in Davidson, NC. Needless to say, it was a great learning experience and a nice sense of accomplisment.

Pinarello Paris SRAM Red, fulcrum racing 1The Pinarello Paris came in Matte White, Black, and Red. The Matte color really looks nice and it is definitely different than the shiney finishes. I chose the SRAM RED groupo component set, another new one on me. (always used Dura-Ace on previous bikes). We did have a bit of an issue with the front derailer but SRAM sent out a replacement overnight and the problem was resolved. The wheelset packaged with the Pinarello is the Fulcrum Racing 1. I was suprised to see them weigh in 100grams less than my reliable American Classic 420.

I rode the bike two times now and the fit seems close if not perfect. I am realy excited about riding the Pinarello this week while taking part in the Ctcle NC event. At the same time I’m a bit nervous as well. I am very pleased with the ride comfort and performance of the Pinarello so far. I simply wish I had a bit more seat time before leaving. One adjustment I did make was change out the saddle to my previous saddle. There was no way I wanted to use a new sadle, a new bike, and new components for 600 miles.

So, I am all packed up and somehow managed to get everything into one suitcase under 40 pounds. Due to the expected cold weather coming thru the mountains, I had to go shopping today for some winter gear. I can’t beleive the temperature dropped down to the 30s….geeez, not to mention possible snow flurries.

We will drive up to Elkin early in the morning. Cycle NC officially starts at 7:30 am and we are on our way to Mayodan along with 1200 riders and a large number of volunteers.

Check back Sunday night for Cycle NC photos and a full ride update.
