Today I shipped out my Grammo 88 Carbon Tubular Wheelset to a cycling guy out in Las Vegas. I used the wheelset for about 10 time trial races, and I had mixed results but good results. But, Ebay called, and I listed and sold them.
The Grammo 88mm deep dish wheelset was a bit much for me. I just never got used to being blown from side to side when running the front Grammo. I used the rear wheel much more. The only negative thing was more with my power than with the wheel itself. It seemed like every time I hit an incline, it was al I could do to get the wheels churning again. But, once they were cranking, they were cranking fast!
This year I will move back to my American Classic 420 wheelset, and use my disc cover on the rear. WheelBuilder out of California sent one to me a few years ago and it worked very well. The best benefit about the American Classics is that I don’ feel tossed around on the front wheel. The 420 is close to a Zipp 303, and just a touch shorter than the Zipp 404.
If I were more of a triathlon rider and rode in my TT position all the time, the Grammo 88s would be a good fit. But for me, 20 – 24 mile TTs is my limit. The majority around here are in the 10 to 12 mile range. So, I am all for dropping the deep disc and using something I can power thru much quicker. The bottom line is, I know I have posted much quicker times using the AC 420s, so I’m sticking with what works best for me.
It’s time to ride. Assault on Italy anyone?
